This weekend I spent the night at two of my best friends' houses, and at one house my friend Melissa and I watched "Labyrinth" on youtube. The whole entire thing. And at my other friend (Janet's) house, I watched Twilight. I promise I watched the latter one out of lack of anything better to do. First I guess I'll talk about Labyrinth.
Labyrinth
~~~~~~~~~
1. First, I'd like to say that seeing it was definitely worth it. It wasn't as creepy or weird as I thought it would be (I should've recalled its PG rating!) It was full of laughs and interesting things to think about. I've read comics like "Roommates" and "Girls Next Door" for approximately two years now, never getting a lot of the Labyrinthine jokes. Now... I finally can make some sense out of it.
David Bowie. Umm... wow. I... will confess... I didn't even know he was going to sing anything. But there he was, strutting his stuff in the famous (or, rather, infamous) "Dance Magic Dance" scene. It was the first piece of the movie I saw on youtube, and after laughing so much, I had to see the rest. That scene pretty much makes the movie, because If you see it, you'll know that a lot of it is blah-blah-blah coming from 80's puppets. David Bowie as Jareth is all I kept waiting to see, scene after scene. Although his pants insult me somewhat, his character over-all is hilarious, cool, and a bit tragic. I couldn't suppress a few "aww"s and "Poor Jareth".
Sarah... where can I begin? I suppose I'll make it short by saying that she was a complete brat. Whining, complaining and pitying herself... sure, she was put through a frustrating situation, but that's no excuse for her sometimes utterly selfish attitude. Didn't she care that Jareth sent her brother to Goblin Kingdom so she could learn a lesson? Didn't she care that she completely blew him off without an explanation in the end there? Hmmm? Na... But I really enjoyed the masquerade scene when she wore that gorgeous dress. I really want a dress like that someday. ^_^
And lastly, I suppose I support the Jareth and Sarah pairing, but once again, Sarah is way too young to even realize what she should be doing. A sequel (or really good phanfiction) to continue her relationship with Jareth sounds ideal. I felt like the hour and a half of movie was a bit of a jip. I really wanted to see some juicy diologue or romantic moments, and found that a lot of that must be left to one's imagination. At least I have those awesome comics to get back to and read all over again!
And now, for my mini Twilight review!
Twilight
~~~~~~~~
I truly thought I would never see this movie... even when there was a huge hype about it, I'm very individualistic and cared not to see it. Curious as I was, I knew it was going to be a waste of my time, and I know myself. The subject of Vampires just makes me shudder (no offense to any of you out there, who I know like the subject!) So I withheld my slight desire to check it out at the movie theater and decided it wasn't worth it. But then, here I was, at my friend's house, and she made a very insulting dare. She told me that if I watched Twilight, I'd obsess over it just as I did when I watched Phantom at her house all those years ago. I waved her off and swore to her that such a thing would be blasphemous, but she insisted that we perform a little... er... as Jekyll would call it.... "experiment".
Before bed we popped it into the Dvd player and began watching it. I cursed myself for giving in, but I knew it wouldn't hurt. I'm usually wary of scary films, or films that compromise my moral standings. But I'm also mature enough to know where I stand and I knew that the movie wouldn't affect me... it was going to be stupid anyway. Sure enough I was correct.
The entire movie was laced with dramatic lines that in the end, sounded cheesy, corny, and were hard not to laugh at. I noticed the makers of the film (purposefully) stuck in this teal-ish shade of blue into the set wherever they could. Either the sky was blue or the paint on the walls was the exact same shade of blue. And when they could they would even have the characters wearing a teal shirt or hoodie. It began to get annoying. True, there were only two scenes that I recall where the "blue filter" as I like to call it, wasn't used... those scenes were full of gold Christmas lights in the background. Yes.
Let's talk about the characters. Bella, the heroine of the film, was much like me and yet, so unlike me. I liked her hair and the fact that she was a bit of a tomboy. I was always the tomboy. But her acting stunk and her facial expressions, even worse. Did you ever notice that she can never smile? No, not once!! All her smiles were half-smiles and fake. Even when she was with her precious Edward, she couldn't crack one. Was it because they told the actress (no, I don't know her name...) that she had to have this look of helplessness every time she was with Edward? Every single scene, she was either gawking, confused, angry, sad, worried, afraid or in pain.
Edward... didn't dazzle me. Sure, saving the girl's life a few times seems like he's sweeping her off her feet (which, I guess he did!) And SURE Bella and him look IDENTICAL... but really. This is what I have a hard time understanding. Just because a guy can resist the urge to suck your blood and flippin' KILL you, does that really mean he's a great catch?
Other things that bothered me about Edward: They flat-out picked an ugly actor. His hair looks like a wall... his sparkliness looks like sweat, not diamonds... his armpits REALLY DO sweat... he isn't cute when he stutters... his acting wasn't much better than Bella's (rather, the girl who played Bella. Don't judge my lack of knowledge regarding this subject... I DON'T CARE!!) And one more thing. Doesn't he know that within the standards of human beings within ANY time period, it's just a bit CREEPY to watch someone sleep.
One thing I kept screaming at the screen was the fact that they were only 17. Okay, so Edward is technically older than that, but Bella's just a child. I could understand if this was 1880 (girls married young a long time ago!) But this isn't just marriage Edward and Bella are talking about. Bella constantly risks her life for Edward. She runs from home and is willing to put herself in danger time and time again just for her little Edward. She doesn't have that much sense locked in that brain of hers. True, love is blind. True, they look identical (I have a theory that when people look oddly alike, they might belong together...) but despite everything, she and Edward don't think clearly. I hate to break it to a lot of those teens out there, but I don't think Bella was wise in giving up what was really more important than finding love. Her family. She pretty much ignored them the entire movie. I would hope things get better for her and her parents later on, and true, every good kid loves their parents, but she should try showing it.
Really, I just thought it was so unrealistic and really, not wise, to have a story where two "teens" fall madly in love with each other and compromise their safety and morals along the way. If I were in Bella's shoes, I'd have stopped talking to Edward long before he had a chance to save her life.
But maybe some find the story cute... and I can see where scenes that I saw as "cheesy" and "lame" could be completely adorable to others. At least Edward's a "classy" and "soft" vampire. I suppose he's a lot better than some guys out there.
So... verdict? I enjoyed watching it, for the sake of getting it over with. Now I know what to say when people start talking about it. But it wasn't as good or interesting as I actually thought it would be.
In closing, I'd like to reassure you all that I will not post any drawings based on Twilight, but you'll be sure to see a little Jareth pop up in my gallery very, very soon. Twilight = Slightly worth watching (If you're bored as I was, and wish to get into "the loop"), but not all that it was cut out to be. Labyrinth = Fun to watch, and even remotely awesome, but not obsession-worthy. It's still Phantom for me.
Peace out, and enjoy the beginning of summer!
God bless you,
~DarthxErik

...which was my entire reaction to Twilight in general. Especially during the science lab scene. Oh, boohoo, your teacher acts halfway smart. Must mean he's boring. Plus, Edward the genius'll help you. Especially when the stuff you're learning IS SEVENTH GRADE CELL STUDIES.
*cough* I'm done.

"No! Not at all Edward! Let's kiss now!"
"Okay!
Oh, how the days have changed from when in Dracula women would scream and turn away in disgust at vampires, and now they are all over them.
Ha ha. I noticed that as well. Mitosis? that's middle school!

Ah! I totally agree with you about Twilight! My friends and I saw it in the theater just for laughs (and we sure laughed a lot and got a lot of nasty stares
And Bellas acting drove me insane too! She seemed to have NO emotion EVER! It bugged me so much! She did not seem like a person who would be very pleasant to be around
I just dont get it
